Express Entry is the application process for skilled immigrants who want to settle in Canada permanently and take part in our economy. The three (3) main economic class immigration programs consist of the following:

  • Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) – For skilled workers with foreign work experience. Must meet criteria for education and other factors.
  • Canadian Experience Class (CEC) – For skilled workers who have Canadian work experience. Work experience must have been gained in the three (3) years before you apply.
  • Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) – For skilled workers who are qualified in a skilled trade. Must have a valid job offer or a certificate of qualification.

Candidates who are eligible for Express Entry can upload their profile using the online system.

Candidates receive a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score based on criteria such as age, education, language skills, and work experience.

Approximately every two weeks, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) invites candidates with the highest CRS scores to apply for permanent residence.

IRCC aims to process permanent residence applications in six months or less.

What is a study permit?

The study permit is a document that Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) issue that allows foreign nationals to study at designated learning institutions (DLIs) in Canada. Most foreign nationals need a study permit to study in Canada.

Eligibility requirements

Candidates can come to Canada to study if you:

  • qualify as a fully vaccinated traveller
(If you’re under 18, you don’t have to be fully vaccinated. You do need to study at a designated learning institution (DLI) with an approved COVID-19 readiness plan.)

    –  the name of the specific employer
    –  duration of work
    –  the location of work (if applicable)
  • Open work permit – This type lets candidates work with any employer in Canada, except for ones that
    –  are listed as ineligible on the list of employers who have failed to comply with the conditions which can be found on the Government of Canada website.
    –  regularly offers striptease, erotic dance, escort services or erotic massages.

What is a visitor visa?

A visitor visa (also called a temporary resident visa) is an official document that Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) stick in your passport. It shows that you meet the requirements needed to enter Canada.

Most travellers need a visitor visa to travel to Canada. You may also need one if you’re transiting through a Canadian airport on your way to your final destination.

Candidates can apply for a visitor visa online or on paper.

How long you can stay?

Most visitors can stay for up to 6 months in Canada.

At the port of entry, the border services officer may allow you to stay for less or more than 6 months. If so, they’ll put the date you need to leave by in your passport. They might also give you a document, called a visitor record, which will show the date you need to leave by.

If you don’t get a stamp in your passport, you can stay for 6 months from the day you entered Canada or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. If you need a stamp, you can ask a border services officer for one.

Make sure you need a visitor visa before you apply.

You may need a visitor visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization. The entry document you need depends on:

  • the type of travel document you plan to travel with
  • the country that issued your travel document
  • your nationality
  • your method of travel to Canada for this trip
